Asafoetida (Hing)

The aromatic hing is stimulant that aids digestion. It relieves spasm, is a good expectorant and a natural lax-active. A little hing wrapped in a piece of cotton placed in the ear will relieve a ear arche.

Cardamom (Elaichi)

Cardamom is prized for its fragrant aroma. While it has a delicate taste, its pharmacological value is that it refreshes the mind and is tonic for the heart. Cardamom also strengthens the lungs, and is known to be an excellent expectorant. In india, it is often served at the end of meal because it aids digestion and also freshens the breath. It should, however, be only used in small quantities.

Cinnamon (Dalchini)

Cinnamon is an aromatic herb with antiseptic and refreshing properties in spite of being heat in nature.

Cloves (Laung)

Cloves are a natural pain reliever. Clove oil can be used to relieve toothaches: in clove oil into the cavity of the tooth. Inhaling the fumes of few drops of clove oil added to boiling water relieves nasal congestion. Chewing a piece of clove with rock candy soothes a dry cough.

Coriander (Dhania)

There are two forms of coriander: the fresh greens of the plant cilantro and the dry seed. Coriander is an extremely aromatic and stimulating substance that aids the digestive process. It has a cooling property and is a natural diuretic when taken in the form of a week tea prepared from the seeds. It is also useful for relieving gas, indigestion and nausea.

Cumin (Jeera)

This herb is aromatic and slightly pungent. It aids digestion and improves the test of food. Roasted cumin powder its effective for intestinal disorders like diarrhea and dysentery, for which a pinch of powdered cumin should be taken with freshly-made buttermilk.

Nutmeg (Jjaiphal)

The aromatic jaiphal is used to improve the taste of teas and milk. When taken with milk, it serves as a tonic for the heart and brain. It is also used alleviate sexual debility. Nutmeg is effective in treating general weakness, disorders of the liver and the spleen, and is also effective in insomnia as it is a relaxant and induces natural sleep. However, it should be taken sparingly and only by adults because of its strength.

Black Pepper (Kali Mirch)

Black pepper increases the secretion of digestive juices and the taste of food. It also alleviates constipation, dry hemorrhoids and gas. Ground whole peppercorns taken with a pinch of honey combats warms in the large intestines. Pepper also helps to relieve swelling. A pinch of black pepper powder with ghee applied externally acts as an antidote to hives.

Turmeric (Haldi)

Turmeric is good blood purifier and works as a tonic to aid digestion and relieve congestion. It has soothing action on respiratory ailments coughs and asthma, is anti-arthritic, and acts as a natural anti-bacterial. To relieve inflammation of the tonsils and congestion of the throat, gargle with a mixture of two pinches of salt in a glass of hot water. Turmeric also has anti-inflammatory properties. A paste of half a teaspoonful of turmeric with a pinch of salt applied to an abrasion, bruise, or traumatic swelling brings quick relief.
